ROCKET ASSISTED TAKE-OFF: HobbyKing / Avios Lockheed C-130 Hercules

Having explored most other aspects of this model we decided to add some pyrotechnics for a rocket assisted take-off. In part inspired by the Blue Angels Display Team Fat Albert which itself has been seen to use a Jato rocket assisted take-off.

Unlike the Fat Albert we opted to put the rockets on top of the fuselage at the CG point so as to limit the possibility of a yaw effect with rockets igniting at different times. It worked perfectly ! We lit the fuses and waited a few seconds for them to burn down and then started rolling on prop power...after a few feet the thrust from the fully ignited rockets kicked in and gave the C-130 a steep climb out with the smoke trailing behind for 5-10 seconds.

This has certainly inspired us to do more pyrotechnic RC projects so watch out for more fireworks ! Note that our rockets were assembled by James who has a lot of experience constructing and launching pyrotechnics. Please be safety conscious if you try the same type of project. Pyrotechnics can be dangerous if not handled correctly.
