The original color scheme of the current "Formula Off-Roader" set (42037) is just plain ugly, and the styling isn't much better. But the rear-wheel-drive chassis and running gear are first-rate, and the price is right. So I changed the colors to black and lime accents and I set about motorized the set for remote control.

Importantly, the SBrick RC receiver makes it possible to drive the upper transaxle shaft with motors at both ends. The middle and lower transaxle shafts are easily regeared to yield a 1:1.19 final overdrive and 1.40:1 and 2.33:1 final reductions. A 3.89:1 final reductions is also possible.

Overall play value is excellent. Steering is quick and precise, and speed is good with the 1:1.19 overdrive gearing installed here. The 2.33:1 and 3.89:1 final reductions (not shown) would normally allow the Lime Runner to tackle fairly steep terrain, but the transaxle has one problem: The differential can't always handle the high torque of the twin L motors.

Note that the soft, lumpy mulch surface in the closing segment would bog down or stall many LEGO RC cars with this kind of speed.

Overall dimensions = 276x222x152 mm (LxWxH)
Mass = 708 g
Platform = Rear-wheel drive (4x2x2)
Drive motors = Twin Ls
Stalled torque = 0.74 N m
Power-to-mass ratio = 6.1 W/kg
Transmission = 4-stage rear transaxle, here with 1:1.19 final overdrive
Suspension = Fully independent
Steering motor = PF servo
RC receiver = SBrick (www.sbrick.com)
Battery = 7.4 V Power Functions rechargeable LiPo
