Here are all the flights that I performed with the Su-35 at the Cerdanya Jets 2018 international meeting. Sadly, on the first day of the event the plane was suffering from an ESC starting problem which prevented me from flying. I could only make one flight very early in the morning (The third one on this video) which was actually the first flight of the day to 'certify' that the plane was airworthy just before officially starting the event. It was a cool flight though as there was very thick fog/mist around in the air that gave the flight a special feeling.

After some ESC tweaking, I managed to get the ESC running for the second day, but most pilots had already left early as they had a long way ahead to get back to their homes.

As a consequence, I essentially had the entire 'Aeròdrom de la Cerdanya' for me alone, which was kind of amazing, to be honest.

On the downside, it was getting a bit windy so I had to restrict the span of my usual 'flight program', and on the last flight the Li-Po battery got really hot and swollen, making the battery hatch pop open. Thankfully I managed to get back and land the jet but it took more than a couple of 'excursions' and a few hours to find and recover the hatch.

This Su-35 is a Freewing airframe and it is powered with two 6S DPS RCLander motors in wemotec fans. Recently, the Wemo rotors had taken a huge beating from FOD and they were not putting out enough thrust so I decided to replace them with the stock 6-blade Freewing rotors until new rotors arrive from wemotec. That likely has played a part in the current draw increase leading to the demise of the battery in the video.

About the event; Cerdanya Jets is an international R/C jet meeting organized in Catalonia, in the historical region of the eastern Pyrenees commonly known as 'La Cerdanya'.

The event gathered 76 pilots from all over Europe, including France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland, and amounted to over 100 aircraft.

Regarding my SU-35 setup:

This is a highly modded Freewing SU-35S. It includes an autopilot controller and an FPV headtracking visual system that makes the plane effectively a UAV/RPA. (Stabilizing functions not active in the flights shown).

The 'autopilot' is a FeiYu-Tech FY-41AP and it also provides the OSD seen on the FPV window.

Just as virtual reality 'VR' goggles are used to play videogames, here a similar technique is used to watch what the plane sees in real time just like if you were sitting in the plane's cockpit, and the camera will follow your head movements!

This is kind of 'reality virtualized' as opposed to 'virtual reality' ... what do you think about it? I encourage you to leave your thoughts in the comments section below!

As for the jet itself, the SU-35S is well known for its supermaneuverability features, that are a result of a good aerodynamic design coupled with the use of thrust vectoring nozzless.

The pilot displays a few post-stall maneuvers using the TV nozzles that would be otherwise impossible to perform with a normal jet aircraft.
